The Nisswa Lightning edged the St. Stephen Steves 4-3 at Trobec Field on Opening Day on Sunday.  It was a well-played game that went right down to the final out.  Nisswa got a 2-out solo Homer from Jason Roepke in the top of the 1st for a 1-0 lead.  The Lightning threatened again in the 2nd against Steves starter Riley Hartwig, a red shirt Freshman at the University of Mary in Bismarck, who was making his Victory League and Steves debut.  A walk to Brett Jenkins and a single by Kyle Schaible followed by a wild pitch gave Nisswa men at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.  Hartwig was able to strand both runners with a strikeout and a ground out.  St. Stephen got their first hit off Nisswa starter Scott Sand when Tony Schmitz led off with a double. But then Sand go Blake Guggenberger to line out to shortstop Jeremiah Piepkorn, who then touched 2nd to double off Schmitz.  A fly out to left then ended the frame.
Nisswa loaded the bases in the 3rd with 2 outs but Hartwig got a fly out to Bo Schmitz in left to leave the bases full.  Nisswa made it 3-0 in the top of the 4th when Logan McElfresh walked with 1 out and then Drew Boland crushed a long Home Run to right.  In the bottom of the 5th, the Steves got on the board with a pair of singles from Tony Schmitz and Brandon Waldvogel and a 2-out throwing error to make it 3-1 after 5.  Nick Krippner, who had relieved Hartwig to start the 5th, worked a 1-2-3 top of the 6th against the 9-1-2 part of the Lightning lineup.  In the bottom of the 6th with Jason Roepke now pitching in relief of Scott Sand, Austin Guggenberger led off with a single.  A 1-out walk to Bo Schmitz put men at 1st and 2nd.  Tony Schmitz then cracked a double to right-center, scoring Guggenberger from 2nd and Bo Schmitz from 1st to tie the game at 3-3.  The Steves got Tony Schmitz to 3rd on a ground ball out to 2nd by Blake Guggenberger but Roepke stranded the potential go-ahead run at 3rd when Aaron Jenkins made the defensive play of the game at 3rd, fielding a 50 foot swinging bunt off the bat of Brandon Waldvogel and making an off-balance throw to 1st just in time to get the runner and end the inning and reserve the 3-3 tie.  In the top of the 7th, Jason Roepke led off with a towering pop out to shortstop Troy Monson before Aaron Jenkins laced a double into the left field corner. After Krippner got the 2nd out on a fly ball to left, Morgan Shepherd singled to center to score Jenkins with the go-ahead run and it was 4-3 Nisswa.  Bo Schmitz then made a great running catch in left-center off the bat of Brett Jenkins, slamming into the fence on a dead spring but hanging onto the ball to end the inning.  In the bottom of the 8th, St. Stephen was facing new pitcher Brett Jenkins.  Two fly balls to right fielder Tyler Witter got the inning started, but Bo Schmitz singled and Tony Schmitz walked to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base with 2 outs.  Jenkins got a called 3rd strike to end that threat as the game moved to the 9th.  Nick Krippner gave way to Chris Belling to pitch the top of the 9th, and Belling ended up hitting Aaron Jenkins to start but a fly out, a fielders choice and a pick-off ended the inning.  Jenkins began the bottom of the 9th by getting a ground out to 2nd for the 1st out.  Tory Monson then reached on a walk, bringing the winning run to the plate.  Cody Wolhart then bounced into a shortstop-to-second fielders choice with Ben Bierscheid now at the plate.  Jenkins finished off the game with a strikeout of the Steves center fielder to end the game and give the Lightning a 4-3 victory.
