The Avon Lakers are headed back to the Class C State Tournament after a 1 year absence after a tightly fought 3-1 win over a Pierz Bulldogs team that was making it's first Region 8C Tournament appearance since 2015.

Matt Pichelmann, who beat Buckman 4-3 with a Complete Game in the first round of the Tournament, came back and hurled another gem against an East Division team with a Complete Game 3-hitter in Avon's 3-1 victory.

The Bulldogs also got a Complete Game effort from their starter Austin Dickmann.

Both Pichelmann and Dickmann pitched scoreless 1st and 2nd innings with only Avon's Josh Becker reaching base with a 2nd inning, 1-out infield single.

In the top of the 3rd, Lakers DH Reed Voit got hit in the wrist by a hard fastball from Dickmann.  Carter Huberty went in to pinch-run for Reed at 1st base.  After a stolen base by Huberty, Dickmann recorded a strikeout and a fly out to right fielder Logan Meyer.  Caleb Curry beat out an infield single to the hole at shortstop to put 2 men on base with 2 outs.  Taylor Holthaus then crushed a 2-run double to left-center to give Avon a 2-0 lead.  After a walk to Riley Voit, Bulldogs catcher Skip Toops threw out Voit attempting to steal to end the inning.

The Bulldogs finally got their first man on base against Pichelmann when Toops walked with 1 out in the bottom of the 3rd, but Pichelmann stranded him there with a strikeout and a fly ball to center.

The Lakers were set down by Dickmann in order in the top of the 4th, and then the Bulldogs threatened to tie things up in the bottom of the inning when Chuck Boser was hit by a pitch with 1 out, followed by Austin Dickmann's double to put the tying run in scoring position with 1 out.  Pichelmann then recorded back-to-back strikeouts to keep the Lakers ahead 2-0 after 4 innings.

Avon would add a run in the top of the 5th.  Reed Voit re-entered the game and led off with a broken-bat single.  He was then replaced at 1st by Tony Harlander, ending Voit's game eligibility.  Harlander was forced out on a ground ball to 3rd baseman Jonah Prokott, with Holthaus reaching safely at 1st.  Matt Meyer then singled, chasing Holthaus to 3rd, where he would tag up and score on Caleb Curry's sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-0.

Both Pichelmann and Dickmann were effective through the next couple of innings, with the only batter to reach base for either team being Avon's Carter Philippi, who walked leading off the top of the 7th, but was erased on a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play as he attempted to steal.

In the bottom of the 7th, the Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard against Pichelmann.  Austin Dickmann led off the inning with his second hit, a line drive to right.  A successful sacrifice bunt by Brandon Dickmann advanced him to 2nd with 1 out.  Pierz then inserted the speedy Jonny Kasper as a pinch-runner for Austin Dickmann at 2nd.  Logan Meyer then walked to bring the tying run to the plate with 1 out.  Bulldogs DH Derek Schommer then hit a sharp grounder towards 2nd base.  The throw to 1st was off target for an error, allowing Schommer to reach safely.  But as Avon 1st baseman Carter Philippi retrieved the errant throw, Kasper was being waved around 3rd towards home.  The throw to the plate was just in time for Lakers catcher Carter Holthaus to apply the tag for the second out of the inning.  That brought up Skip Toops, who cracked an rbi single to score Logan Meyer and make it 3-1.  An inning-ending strikeout for Pichelmann left the potential tying run on base for the Bulldogs as the 7th inning ended with Avon now leading 3-1.

In the top of the 8th, Caleb Curry would single with 1 out, steal 2nd and then race to 3rd when the throw sailed into center.  But Avon was denied by Dickmann form adding to their lead when Dickmann got Taylor Holthaus on strikes and Riley Voit bounced out to 3rd.
In the bottom of the 8th, Pichelmann got Peter Schommer to ground to 2nd, Michael Leidenfrost hit back to the mound and Chuck Boser flew out to left for a quick 1-2-3 inning.

In the top of the 9th, Avon got a 2-out single from Carter Philippi, but that was it, leaving the Bulldogs just one more chance to rally in the bottom of the 9th.

Pichelmann induced Austin Dickmann to ground out to shortstop Caleb Curry, then Brandon Dickmann flew out to center fielder Taylor Holthaus, with the State Tournament clinching out produced on a Logan Meyer ground out to 3rd baseman Matt Meyer to finish off the Avon 3-1 victory.
