The Red Wing Aces eliminated the Avon Lakers from the Class C State Tournament on Sunday with a 3-1 win in Maple Lake in the 2nd Round.

The Aces, Region 5 Champions, plated a run in the bottom of the 1st against Avon starter Matt Pichelmann.  Mitch Matter led off with a line drive single to left, followed by a sacrifice bunt.  Pichelmann got Dixon Irwin to ground out to 2nd baseman Riley Voit, with Matter advancing to 3rd with 2 outs.  Brady Schroeder hot a little roller up the 3rd base line that died in the grass for an infield single, scoring Matter and making it 1-0.  Lakers catcher Carter Holthas then threw out Schroeder attempting to steal 2nd to end the 1st.

Avon then evened things up in the top of the 2nd.  And it began with a 2-out walk to Carter Philippi.  Reed Voit then smashed a single down the left field line, and when the Aces left fielder kicked the ball around in the corner for an error, Philippi raced all the way around the bases to score the tying run.  Connor Huberty then went in to pinch-run for Voit at 2nd.  With Carter Holthaus at the plate, ball 4 in the dirt allowed Huberty to advance to 3rd on the wild pitch and Avon had men at the corners with 2 outs.  That was enough for Red Wing, as they brought in a new pitcher to take over from starter Aaron Johnson.  Brady Schroeder took the mound and got Matt Meyer to pop out to 1st to end the inning with the score tied 1-1.  Red Wing got a lead-off walk from Corey Tauer, followed by a Pichelmann wild pitch and the Aces had the go-ahead run at 2nd with no outs.  But Pichelmann then got back-to-back strikeouts and a ground out to shortstop Caleb Curry to preserve the 1-1 tie after 2 innings.

Avon went quietly in the top of the 3rd , as both Caleb Curry and Taylor Holthaus grounded out, followed by Riley Voit's line out to center.  In the bottom of the 3rd, Pichelmann got Zach Garding to line out to left fielder Cody Stich, but then walked Mitch Matter.  Adam Thygesen followed with a single to put 2 men on base with 1 out.  Irwin Dixon then ripped a single to right, bringing in Matter with the go-ahead run.  Another run would score in the inning on an errant pick-ff throw to 1st, allowing Thygesen to score and giving Red Wing a 3-1 lead after 3 innings.

In the top of the 4th, Avon managed a 2-out walk to Carter Philippi but that was it.  The Aces countered with a minor threat in the bottom of the 4th when Kyle Blahnik led off with a single, but then a failed sacrifice bunt resulted in a pop up back to Pichelmann and then a called 3rd strike.  A walk to Mitch Matter put 2 men on base but Pichelmann got out of that jam when shortstop Caleb Curry made a fine running catch on a shallow pop out to center field to end the 4th with Red Wing still ahead 3-1.

Avon got off to a promising start in the top of the 5th when Carter Holthaus walked, and then Matt Meyer drilled a single to center.  Avon put both runners in motion, but with the shortstop moving towards 2nd to cover the bag, a ground ball up the middle by Caleb Curry turned into a 6-6-3 double play.  Another bouncer to shortstop Zach Harding ended the Avon threat with Holthaus stranded at 3rd.  In the bottom of the 5th, Matt Pichelmann worked his first, and only, 1-2-3 inning by retiring the Aces on a pair of ground balls to Carter Philippi at 1st and a fly out to Josh Becker in right.

In the top of the 6th, Cody Stich doubled into the right field corner with 2 outs, but was left there on an inning-ending strikeout.  Red Wing put two men on base in the bottom of the 6th with base hits, but Pichelmann struck out Mitch Matter looking to end the 6th with the 3-1 score still intact.

In the top of the 7th, Schroeder had a 1-2-3 inning a strikeout, a foul out to the catcher and a ground out.  Red Wing  collected a 2-out single from Brady Schroeder in the bottom of the 7th but Pichelmann ended the frame with a ground out to Riley Voit at 2nd.

It took Schroeder just 8 pitches to get through the top of the 8th on 3 ground balls as the Ace pitcher ran his string to 7 straight Lakers retired.  In the bottom of the 8th, Red Wing's Kyle Blahnik singled, his 3rd hit of the game, with 1 out.  But Pichelmann got  fly ball to Josh Becker in right and a ground ball to Caleb Curry at shortstop to end the 8th and give Avon one last opportunity, trailing 3-1 heading to the top of the 9th.

In the top of the 9th, Josh Becker flew out to left, followed by a Cody Stich fly out to center and the Lakers were down to their final out.  Carter Philippi kept Avon's hopes alive by beating out an infield single to bring the potential tying run to the plate.  But it wasn't to be a Schroeder struck out Tony Harlander to end the game and send the Aces to the Sweet 16 and at the same time, end the Avon season.
